Dr. Niels Kirsten
Dr Niels Kirsten was born and raised in Townsville. In 2010, Dr Kirsten became the first Aboriginal student to complete a JCU Bachelor of Nursing
Science, via the University’s Indigenous Health Careers Access Pathway
(IHCAP). Dr Kirsten worked in rural communities in far North Queensland as a registered nurse. But that was just a start. Dr Kirsten went on to study
Bachelor of Dental Surgery at JCU to follow in his father’s footsteps as a
dentist, graduating in 2015. Then he took a further step, becoming the first
Aboriginal dentistry graduate to complete a JCU postgraduate course
(Diploma of Implantology). Growing up in a dental practice and observing his father, Niels had developed a strong interest in dentistry early in life. Since graduating as a dentist, he has attended many courses in practical oral surgery. Dr Kirsten’s ambitions as a general dentist is to provide a broad service to Charters Towers and the surrounding communities.
